The Thirteenth Annual Chelsea Ballet Adult Summer School

In the summer of 2005 I wanted to attend a summer school but struggled to find anything for my age group. All the summer schools were designed for kids, professional students and professional dancers. I eventually found the ideal summer school ….. in America. After adding up all the costs of getting there, attending and living it was way out of my price range. It was then that I thought “why not organise my own summer school”. So over a bottle of Rose I hatched the plan with two friends from Chelsea Ballet and we started to plan a timetable and the logistics.

It was always my intention that the school would be small so that people would have the opportunity to mix and make friends. I also wanted people to receive more attention from the teachers, which can be difficult with large classes. I think I can safely say this has been achieved and it is great to see the same faces returning year after year. I take no payment for organising this School. I do it because I want to. Instead I am rewarded by seeing how people have improved with each visit - not only in technique but also in confidence.

I myself trained professionally and now teach and I go away with a lot more knowledge, which I pass onto my own students. I am delighted to announce that Chelsea Ballet will be holding the thirteenth annual week- long summer school from Monday, 6th August – Saturday, 11th August 2018. The summer school is open to anyone over the age of 18 with an elementary and above standard of ballet who would like the chance to work on technique and performance quality in a friendly and supportive environment and receive correction and advice from the teaching staff.

Please note that this school is not suitable for beginners.

The school will be held at Pineapple Dance Studios, Covent Garden, London.

We have not included an official lunch break so as to utilise the studio and include a fuller programme. Participants will have the option to sign up for as many or as few classes as they want – “Pic’n’Mix”.

Memories of Chelsea Ballet Summer School 2017

Last year I mentioned in class that the summer break from ballet was always too long for me........and that was the moment my summer holiday plans changed. My teacher told me all about Chelsea Ballet’s week long summer school. At first I was unsure if the more ‘mature student’ would be welcome but was convinced by my teacher that this would not be an issue. So without further ado I applied. From the very first response I received from Louise Hudson the whole process of registering /payment was super smooth, friendly and welcoming. Clear instructions on location, timings and the costs of the various classes on offer were given well in advance, which allowed me to plan and prepare travel arrangements.

On arrival at the venue I met with other dancers of all ages and I definitely felt at ease by the friendly nature of everyone present. It was also a testament to the popularity of the summer school as a good number of the attendees were returners. People had booked a week’s holiday from work to attend. A few had travelled long distances, staying in hotels nearby to obtain full immersion in a week of dance. It was awesome to see and feel such dedication.

On offer throughout the day were classes in Pilates, elementary and intermediate ballet, and pointe work. The standard of teaching was so good. I have found many classes were mature people attend can leave you feeling unfulfilled as a dancer. No such problem at Chelsea Ballet. The expectations were high and you were made to feel you had achieved them by the excellent teachers. They were amazing and very encouraging. The ballet class I attended was taken by Richard Ramsey, a more positive and enthusiastic teacher would be hard to find. The pointe class was taken by his wife, Bethany Ramsey, again the enthusiasm for teaching radiated out of Bethany. Every class was hard work but so much fun. By the end of day one I felt truly inspired and couldn’t wait for day two, on day three I did take a rest, being more mature does take its toll when you are not used to whole days of dance. However by the end of the week I felt hugely inspired and realised how much more I had to give to my dance.

My thanks go to Chelsea Ballet Summer School for all the inspiration and joy it gave me for the week. I would and will go back next year and plan to attend as many of the classes as I can.

I was thrilled when I first found out about the Chelsea Ballet Summer School - I'd never heard of a summer school that was available to adults! In fact, I think Chelsea Ballet was the first organisation to do this. I signed up immediately. Louise gathered together many excellent teachers, and the mixture of ballet class, Pilates, pointe work and repertoire across the whole day was truly inspirational. I finished that week more tired than I've ever been, but also surer than ever that ballet is one of the best things on this earth.

I love this opportunity to join in these great ballet classes, for me as a reminder of how very enjoyable they are, with wonderful teaching in a friendly environment, participating at our different standards.
